October 13-14. Annual Carolina Outdoors Kayak Fishing Tournament from Kitty Hawk Kites. 4 species of fish, best of each category, then Slam-best of 3 fish and Grand Slam, Best of 4 fish! Call Doug's number as contact 252-202-6282 or email watersports@kittyhawk.com.
October 21-22. 21st Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition from Kitty Hawk Kites. Wright Brothers Memorial (mp 8), Nags Head. This competitive fly is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned by the American Kiting Association. Throughout the weekend non-competitors can enjoy workshops, demonstrations and kite making for kids. The highlights of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music, and fast paced team flying that blends a both kite control and speed. 877-FLY-THIS or 252-441-4124 or email cdavies@kittyhawk.com.
 As seasons change, so does typical Outer Banks visitor
Cassie and Bob McBride drove to the Outer Banks from Portsmouth last week for a three-day vacation with another couple.
It was enough time to relax, eat at their favorite restaurants, get a history refresher at the Wright Brothers National Memorial and sightsee along Cape Hatteras National Seashore. In the evenings, the women shopped while their husbands fished.
The McBrides and friends Margaret and Robert MacKenzie of Scotland, all between the ages of 51 and 60, typify the fall season's vacationers, according to a recent study commissioned by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.
