Bruce Weaver - Hang Gliding Expert
I took my first hang gliding lesson in the summer of 1986 at Kitty Hawk Kites. After gaining more experience, I starting teaching hang gliding during the summers of 1987-1989. From there, I Moved to the Outer Banks in 1990 and have been working with the hang gliding school ever since. I have taught, 1000's of students from all walks of life ranging from little kids to people in the 90's, paraplegics, blind, def, terminally ill, amputees, descendants of the Wright Brothers, astronauts, actors/actresses, comedians, Olympic athletes, TV personalities, military men, women and officers. I have pretty much experienced all one can experience on the Outer Banks being a hang gliding instructor.
When somebody finds out that you hang glide the most common question is, "what's it like?" Most people will say it feels the same when you fly in your dreams or flying like a bird. But to me hang gliding more than just the physical feeling of flying like a bird, which of course is absolutely amazing, it's the feeling you get from flying like a bird. There are certain moments in everybody's lives that make them smile when they look back on them. I don't mean that it just makes them feel good; it actually makes them feel good enough that they can't help but smile to themselves. But I'm not talking about the smile you get from reflecting back on a certain stage in your life, I'm talking about the involuntary smile you get when a certain memory is triggered. You know the smile, it's the one that seemingly radiates from nowhere and lasts just a few seconds. It's not the big "smile-for-the-camera" smile; it's that little half smile that's meant only for you. It's the one that if someone catches you doing it, they immediately ask' "whatcha smiling at?" and you reply, "oh, nothing". It can be triggered by the memory of something as small as a perfectly timed comment or as important as finally realizing a personal goal. Either way, it's very personal. Its that deep sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, contentment, or joy that pops into our heads out of the blue that makes us uncontrollably flash a smile. The feeling at that very moment is what it feels like to fly a hang glider. It's a feeling that's hard to outshine.
