Welcome to the Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding newsletter. From our family to yours, we hope that everyone has had a safe and memorable holiday season. Although the unexpected warmth through the first half of winter was a pleasant gift to us all, it looks like Jack Frost has finally arrived. Don't let these freezing cold days get you down, just remember that summer fun on the beach is right around the corner. But if you can't wait, remember that the hang gliding school stays open all year. So come on down and take advantage of our winter special, where you can buy one lesson and get a second lesson for half price! This offer is only good ‘till Valentine's Day, so hurry up and book a romantic and adventurous weekend with us now. We're still open everyday and with smaller classes, more individual attention, and more flights, your comfort and control over the glider will soar to new heights quickly.

For the hang gliding school, this has been a busy off-season. We have spent much time cleaning and reorganizing our shop in preparation for the upcoming season. We just got finished doing an inventory of all of our equipment and we realized that we needed to make some room for this year's new product so we cut the prices on some of our gliders. Check these hang gliders out at here. With a little training; most of our gliders will take you from the dunes to the mountains, and beyond. It would only take about 7 or 8 lessons to be able to fly one of these gliders off Jockey's Ridge and about another 10 lessons to be able to fly one off a mountain! We can get you there. Just let us know.

This is also the time of year that we count up all your instructor rating cards to determine our coveted instructor of the year. This year's results are as follows: 3rd place - Xan Harwood, 2nd place - Dave Rosner “Roz,” and the Instructor of the Year 2006 - Dugan Gravage. Congratulations and thanks for all the hard work and hot days that these guys, and all our instructors, endured this season to provide a safe and fun environment. As most of the instructors are returning for another summer, they all hope to see your familiar faces out on the dunes once again. We couldn't do it without the support of such great students, whose smiling faces remind us why it is always worth walking back up that hill.

We were also lucky enough to meet Ty Pennington and the cast and crew from Extreme Home Makeover this fall. While in Raleigh rebuilding a house, they heard about our program and just had to go for a flight. Ty was quite friendly and flew very well for a rookie. Maybe they should come back to remodel the instructors' house, or at least try to get all the sand out. The episode aired in mid-January and featured a brief section dedicated to their time in OBX with us. They spent time both on the dunes and at the airport, getting the full experience. We all had a great time. Click here to see the video.

For any travelers out there, check out this article about our hang gliding program in Southwest Airlines' Spirit Magazine. There is a very well written piece on the dune school that has already brought us business from around the country. Click here to read the article.

With another awesome summer in the books, it's about time to focus on preparing for an even better season in ‘07. Although the dune school stays open year round, ready to fly, our tandem program at altitude takes a break due to the cold. We will begin hang gliding on weekends in April, and increase our schedule to accommodate demand throughout the following months. So if you have a free weekend, come out in early spring to get a head start on the summer fun.

We also wanted to invite everyone to our Hang Gliding Spectacular. Held over the weekend from May 18-21, come watch as pilots, former instructors, and rated students from around the country take part in the world's oldest hang gliding competition. Fun on the dunes for three days straight include individual and team rounds, with pylons, ring grabbing, bowling pins, music, food, and friends. This year is special as we are emphasizing our instructor reunion, getting all the old dune goons together to remember the good ‘ol days. Stop by the street dance at night to hear some side-splitting stories of flying high and beach debauchery.

Thanks again for signing up for our mailing list, as we hope to keep you informed and entertained in following issues. We can't wait to see you, so let's have some fun and turn a great vacation into some amazing memories.

By the way, this is also the time of year that Kitty Hawk Kites starts hiring for our summer season. So if living on the OBX, working for an awesome company and being able to walk across the street and take a dip in the ocean during your lunch break sounds good to you, let us know.   We're always looking for good people.  Check out job opportunities here.
