Town of Duck gives back to the community

The Town of Duck has created the Village Improvement Grant Program. The goal of the program is to promote the improvement of the appearance of the town.

The program makes matching funds available to both commercial and residential community organizations for exterior projects, in the form of one time grants of up to 50 percent of qualifying project costs with a limit of $2500 per grant for commercial projects and $1500 per grant for residential projects. The minimum total cost of a qualifying project is $2000.

Creativity is encouraged! Upon approval, qualifying applicants can use this money to improve landscaping, add bike racks, paint, improve signage, change lighting, add walkways, install public restrooms, create playgrounds, rehab the exterior of buildings -- many different ways one could improve the appearance of a business, shopping center, or subdivision. All applicants must go through an application process and stay within Town guidelines.

There also is a Community Awards Program. This will be an annual award for the "Best in Duck" in the following categories: commercial/residential landscape, commercial/residential public place, and best commercial/residential seasonal display. Anyone can nominate any business, residence or residential community for any of these awards. The community Improvement Committee will inspect all nominations and will give the award to the winning nominees.

For more information on how to apply for improvement grants an how to nominate, visit the Town of Duck website www.townofduck.com or call Sandy Cady or Sue Cotellessa at (252) 255-1234 or stop by the town offices.

Tech Talk

This is a NEW section that will be displayed every issue. This month's issue is written by Chris Moore, who operates the KHK Kiteboarding Centers and has taught thousands of people to kiteboard and has been involved in the sport of kiteboarding since its conception. He has been flying kites professionally since 1990!

Kiteboarding, is the fastest growing water sport in the world and Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Centers has been leading the industry by pioneering instructional techniques! If you are at all interested in learning to kiteboard, there are a few things that you need to do in order to prepare for your lessons.

1) The first step is to purchase a power kite and learn to fly it extremely well. The sport is definitely a form of kiteflying and most of skills needed to learn are knowing how to control a kite well! If you are considering kiteboarding as your next hobby, you should start with one of our kiteboarding trainer packages.

2) The second step is to fly the kite in a variety of wind conditions until you are smooth and consistent every single time. You will learn something new in every type of wind speed. This part of the training is about developing "muscle memory" so that flying the kite is effortless. This is loads of fun!!!

3) Follow the land based exercises on my video, "The Way to Fly" This video is designed specifically to be used as a training tool, for those just getting started in kiteboarding. As Chris suggests, “It is best to start your training with a trainer kite and practice the specific exercises detailed in this video. Practice these exercises, guided by this video, over and over again. I guarantee that you will excel both faster and safer with larger kites as a result!”

Over 50 solid minutes of instructional exercises! * Perfect the Power Strokes on Land! * Simulated Water Start Exercises will make doing on the water effortless! *Simulated Riding Exercises teach the dynamics of kite traction!

Did you know? Power Kiting is the ultimate in "Harnessing the Wind" and it is not for the weak of heart! The prominent feature of large kites is the amount of pull they can generate, especially in high winds. Power kites take this to the extreme! Today's power kites are used for recreational kite traction, being pulled by a kite.

Did you know that you can use a power kite to pull you on a Landboard, Kite Buggy, Snow Kiting, Roller Blades, or the seat of your pants!

You can contact Chris for all your Power Kite or Kiteboarding questions directly at (252) 207-1639.
