Tech Talk

This is a NEW section that will be displayed every issue. This month's issue is written by Bruce Weaver who is Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding Manager.

Ahhh! It's here! Fall...the best time of year here on the Outer Banks. The crowds are gone, the temperatures are in the 70's and low 80's, the ocean is still warm, and best of all the prevailing winds have shifted from the Southwest to the Northeast. Not only does this bring in cooler drier air off the ocean, but it usually blows into our largest training hill (the east coast's tallest sand dune!). So, whether you're a seasoned pilot or have just always dreamed of flying, this is the time to spread your wings and fly here at Kitty Hawk Kites!!

The Wright Brothers chose the Outer Banks to learn to fly because of its perfect conditions (smooth ocean breezes and soft forgiving sand). Even though it's been a little over 100 years since the Wright brothers earned their wings here on the Outer Banks, we still enjoy the same conditions, making this one of the premier hang gliding training sites in the world. The Wright Brothers made thousands of gliding flights on dunes just like Jockey's Ridge before putting an engine on their wing and changing the world forever. Although your first flight off of Jockey's Ridge may not be noticed worldwide, it may very well change your world forever. Kitty Hawk Kites has taught well over 275,000 people how to fly since opening its doors in 1974. We have taught people from all walks of life, from movie stars to space shuttle pilots. We've taught people from ages 8 to 90; deaf, blind, paraplegic, amputees and all of these people will never look at a bird flying overhead the same way again. As Leonardo DaVinci said,"Once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you long to return."

It wasn't that long ago that kings would have given fortunes and people would have given their life's savings for the chance to fly like a bird. Now for as little as $69.00, anybody can get 3 flights off of Jockey's Ridge and realize one of man's oldest dreams. We have lesson packages that will take students from these first flights all the way to point where they can fly thousands of feet in the air. We can even get you up to a couple of thousand feet on your first lesson! We put you in the glider with an instructor and tow you up behind an ultralight airplane. Once you get to altitude we release the line and you and the instructor fly back down and land at the airport. We can get you up to anywhere between 1,500' and a mile high! We also have powered hang gliders that you can fly in with your instructor. One of these "trike tours" takes about 20 minutes and there is no better way to see the Outer Banks!

In addition to great weather the fall also brings with it great savings on lessons. Choose our UNLIMITED lesson package, allowing you to fly as much as you like between November 1st and March 31st for the price of only a few lessons!!! There is no better deal in the sport! People who take advantage of this package can expect to get at least their first rating as a Hang Glider Pilot (Hang 1), which would allow them to fly off Jockey's Ridge with out any supervision. As an added bonus, anybody who gets their Hang 1 here at Kitty Hawk Kites is able to come down and fly our training gliders for FREE for life, as long as their rating is current. And if that wasn't enough, anybody who gets their Hang 1 here can put the money they paid for their lessons toward the purchase price of a new glider. Essentially, if you buy a glider, you get your training for FREE! You will not find a better deal anywhere!

Whether you want to just try a flight or learn how to fly at a couple thousand feet by yourself, this is the time to spread your wings! Take advantage of the weather and the rates and come down and realize your dream of flight. There's no better time and no better place than fall on the Outer Banks.

You can contact Bruce for all your Hang Gliding questions.
