With a Beginner Kite Flying Lesson, you will learn how to launch, steer, loop, dive, and land a framed stunt kite with one of our kite instructors.
Learn to fly a stunt kite on the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. A stunt kite is a dual-line kite designed for precise control and acrobatic maneuvers, allowing flyers to perform loops, dives, and patterns in the sky. A typical Beginner Kite Flying Lesson will last between 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the number of students.

Lessons are typically taught in a 4:1 student to instructor ratio. If you would like pricing on groups larger than 4 participants, please give us a call.
Special arrangements for Kite Clinics for large groups are also available.
The class starts with check-in at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head, directly across the highway from the dunes. There, you will learn about winds, safety, and flying conditions, as well as how to assemble and handle a 2- line stunt kite.
Next, your instructor will take you across the highway and up onto Jockey’s Ridge Dunes. The walk is about 100 yards from the store to our flying location on the front of the dune. Once the instructor gives you a demonstration of how to fly a kite, you will begin to fly on your own!
You will be taught how to:
- Launch the kite
- Keep it in motion
- Steer the kite on your own
- Make the kite dive and loop
- Create beautiful patterns with a long tail attached to the kite
- How to land the kite without crashing
Before you know it, you will be proficient and trying out new things on your own!

Frequently Asked Questions
Review some commonly asked questions so you know before you go.
What should I wear? +
What you wear will depend on the weather and time of year. For summer months, it’s highly recommended to wear closed-toe shoes or sand socks to protect your feet from the hot sand. Sunglasses are also recommended to help you track your kite in the sky. Please dress with the current weather conditions in mind!
What should I bring? +
We recommend bringing the following for your lesson:
- Sunscreen
- Enough water for 1.5 to 2 hours outside
- Eye protection
- A small bag for your belongings
Cameras are welcome and encouraged! While gratuity is not included or expected, it is always greatly appreciated if you feel your instructor provided an excellent experience.
Where is the lesson held? +
Our stunt kite lessons are held at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head, NC, located right across the street from Jockey’s Ridge State Park. JRSP has long been a wonderful venue for wind-related activities. The lesson will begin inside the kite store and move out onto the sand dunes when you are ready to fly your kite.
What type of kites will we learn to fly? +
The focus of the lesson will primarily be on dual-line stunt kites. We work with a variety of brands, including Premier Kites, Prism Kites, and Revolution Kites.
If you have a specific brand or type of kite you would prefer to work with, let us know, and our team will do their best to accommodate your request.
