FAQs
Before you book
Do I need a boating license to rent a pontoon boat in the Outer Bahnks? +
No boating license is required. However, the person operating the boat must have a valid driver’s license.
Can we tow a tube, water skis, or other equipment behind the boat? +
No. For insurance and safety reasons, towing is not permitted. This includes tubes, water skis, wakeboards, and similar equipment. You’re welcome to bring an inner tube for floating while anchored in the sound.
Can we go fishing from the pontoon boat? +
Yes! Pontoon boats are great for casual fishing. Fishing equipment is not included, but can be rented locally. A North Carolina fishing license is required, which can be purchased at many nearby bait & tackle shops.
How far are we allowed to take the boat? +
You may travel up to 5 miles from the dock in any direction. Your rental team will review safe boundaries and provide a map upon check-in.
What is included in my pontoon boat rental? +
Your rental includes:
- The boat itself
- One tank of fuel
- U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) for all passengers
- A swim ladder
- An anchor
Are life vests required while on board? +
Life jackets are required for all children under 12 and recommended for everyone on board. PFDs are provided for all guests and must be worn by children at all times while on the boat.
Can someone from your team drive the boat for us? +
No, we do not offer captained pontoon rentals. If no one in your group feels comfortable driving, we recommend considering one of our guided tours or inshore excursions instead.
Does my infant count toward the boat's capacity? +
Yes. All passengers, including infants, count toward the boat’s total occupancy, per U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
Can we bring our dog on the pontoon boat? +
Yes, dogs are welcome on our pontoon rentals. You are responsible for your pet’s safety and any damage caused by your dog during the rental period.
Can we bring food and drinks on board? +
Yes, you are welcome to bring your own snacks, meals, and beverages. Please remember: you are responsible for removing all trash and personal items before returning the boat.
What if we have fewer people than the maximum? +
Prices are per rental, not per person. There is no price adjustment for smaller groups.
Can we extend our time on the water if we are not ready to return? +
If the boat is not booked for another rental, extensions may be available on the day of your rental. Please ask your dock staff for options and availability.
Where do we board the pontoon boat? +
- Duck Rentals: Check in and board at 1226 Duck Road, on the Duck Boardwalk. Look for the Kitty Hawk Kites reservations kiosk.
- Nags Head Rentals: Check in and board at 7517 South Virginia Dare Trail, at our Whalebone Junction location.
