Are You Ready to Kiteboard?

Kiteboarding is one of the most exciting ways to experience the wind and water. With a kite, control bar, harness, and board, riders can cruise across the sound, carve through waves, try jumps, or simply enjoy the freedom of being powered by the wind.

Kiteboarding or Kitesurfing?

Both terms are used often. Kiteboarding and kitesurfing generally refer to the same sport, though “kitesurfing” is sometimes used more when riding waves. Today, the sport includes many styles, from twin-tip boards and surfboards to hydrofoils.

Here on Hatteras Island, the Pamlico Sound offers some of the best kiteboarding conditions in the United States. Warm, shallow water, steady wind, and a sandy bottom make Rodanthe an ideal place to learn to kiteboard or build your skills.

Learning to Kiteboard

Why the Outer Banks is One of the Best Places to Learn Kiteboarding

The Outer Banks is internationally recognized as a premier kiteboarding destination thanks to its unique combination of reliable wind, expansive shallow water, and wide-open riding areas.

What makes the Outer Banks special for Kiteboarding? +

The region experiences consistent winds throughout much of the year, creating ideal conditions for both beginner and advanced riders. Unlike many oceanfront kiteboarding locations that require students to immediately navigate waves and deep water, the Outer Banks offers access to the calm waters of the Pamlico Sound, where riders can stand comfortably in waist-deep water while learning essential skills.

These flat-water conditions dramatically shorten the learning curve by allowing students to focus on kite control, body positioning, and board starts without battling surf or strong currents. The shallow sound also creates a safer, less intimidating environment for first-time riders, making it easier to recover from falls and spend more time practicing. With miles of open riding space and minimal obstacles, students have the freedom to learn in a spacious, uncrowded setting that is difficult to find elsewhere.

What is kiteboarding? +

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is an exhilarating water sport where riders use a large, inflatable kite to harness the wind’s energy to propel themselves across the water on a board. Weather Related Cancellations and Refunds

Weather changes frequently and unexpectedly in coastal areas, and many weather forecasts are inaccurate. Due to these factors, weather related cancellations will likely not occur until very close to time of the scheduled reservation. Should Kitty Hawk Kites cancel your scheduled activity due to unsafe weather conditions, you will be offered the chance to reschedule your activity or Kitty Hawk Kites can either issue you a **wind check** (for Hang Gliding, Paragliding, Kayaking, Kiteboarding, Paddleboarding and Surfing) or provide you with a refund for the portion of the activity you were unable to complete.

If the reservation is made within the 48 hours before the activity time, the reservation is non-refundable at the time of the booking.

Fishing Trips scheduled on the Carolina Blue and the Southern Run require a weeks notice to cancel for a full refund.  Any cancellations made within a week of your fishing trip will be charged full cost of the trip.

Waivers

For activities that require a liability waiver to be completed, each participant of that activity must complete a waiver to participate in that activity. Minor participants (anyone under 18 years old) must have their waiver completed by their parent or legal guardian in order for the minor participant to take part in the scheduled activity. **Wind Checks**

A wind check is a non expiring voucher which allows you to schedule your activity (Hang Gliding, Paragliding, Kayaking, Kiteboarding, Paddleboarding and Surfing) for a future date if you are unable to complete your scheduled activity and cannot reschedule during your stay on the Outer Banks. Wind checks do not have to be used by the person to whom they were issued – so don’t lose them. Kitty Hawk Kites is not responsible for lost or stolen wind checks. If you have a wind check and would like to schedule your activity, simply call reservations at 1-877-FLY-THIS and them know you are redeeming a wind check to begin the scheduling process.
