Fly a reproduction 1902 Wright Glider!

Looking to make history while you’re on the Outer Banks? Fly a reproduction of the Wright Brothers’ 1902 Glider! This replica was built by the Wright Experience and is one of a few in existence. It’s also the only one of its kind available for the public to fly. The 1902 Wright Glider replica is museum quality and allows participants to experience exactly what the Wright Brothers felt as they prepared for their historic flight of the first powered plane in 1903. Your 5 flights over the Dunes will be just like the Wright Brothers. And you’ll be one of the few in the world to ever fly this glider just as the Wright Brothers did (even at the same location) over 100 years ago!

What is the Wright Glider Experience?

The Wright Glider Experience allows you to fly a reproduction of the 1902 Wright Glider, just as the Wright Brothers did over 100 years ago! Built by the Wright Experience, this museum-quality replica lets you feel what the Wright Brothers experienced as they prepared for their historic flight in 1903. You’ll soar 5-15 feet above the ground, flying about 50 yards with the wind beneath your wings—just like the pioneers of flight!

Where does the Wright Glider Experience take place?

The flights take place over the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which is the perfect location for this historic adventure. After your experience, you can visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial to learn more about the history of flight and see where the Wright Brothers made their famous powered flights in 1903.

When is the Wright Glider Experience available?

We offer the Wright Glider Experience year-round, but the best flying conditions are typically found in the fall, winter, and spring when winds are most consistent. We schedule clinics during these months, but if you can’t make the clinic dates, we can also arrange custom dates for groups of 3 or more. We encourage flexibility, as wind conditions are essential for safe and enjoyable flights.

What are the wind conditions required for flying the Wright Glider?

The Wright Glider requires winds between 15-25 mph for optimal flying conditions. This is typical for the Outer Banks, but wind conditions can be unpredictable. Because the glider experience depends on suitable weather, we encourage you to be flexible with your schedule. Keep in mind, ideal winds may occur a day before or after your scheduled clinic.

How many flights will I take?

Each participant takes 5 flights during their Wright Glider Experience, with each flight lasting between 10-15 feet off the ground and covering a distance of about 50 yards.

What does the Wright Glider Experience include?

Ground School: Before flying, you’ll receive a briefing that includes glider orientation, controls, and history of the Wright Brothers and their flight legacy.
Flights: You’ll take 5 flights, each tethered to ensure safety.
Safety Gear: All participants are provided with necessary safety equipment.

Are photo or videos available?

Kitty Hawk Kites offers GoPro footage of your lesson so that you can relive this memory for years to come. We film each flight you take above the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Within 48 hours of your lesson all of your flight footage plus at least 50 to 100 fully edited digital photos of your 1902 Wright Glider Experience will be emailed to you.

Can I bring my own camera or GoPro?

You can bring your own camera; however, we are not responsible for any loss or damage. We do offer a GoPro Film & Photo Package for an additional fee, which includes footage of your flight and edited photos for you to keep as mementos.

How much does the Wright Glider Experience cost?

Pricing varies depending on the number of people in your group:

1 person: $499 for 4 hours and 5 flights
2 people: $449 per person for 4 hours and 5 flights
3 people: $399 per person for 4 hours and 5 flights

  • Water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized
  • Sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun
  • Comfortable, athletic clothing for ease of movement
  • Eye protection (sunglasses or goggles) for comfort
  • Close-toed shoes are highly recommended, as sand temperatures in the summer can be much higher than the air temperature.

What are the age and weight restrictions for the Wright Glider Experience?

Minimum age: 10 years old
Minimum weight: 100 lbs
Maximum weight: 200 lbs
These restrictions are strictly enforced for safety purposes. Please check with us if you have any questions about weight requirements or special conditions.

Do I need to know how to fly or have prior experience?

No prior experience is required! The Wright Glider Experience is designed for people of all skill levels, and our experienced instructors will guide you through every step, from the ground school to the flights themselves.

How long will the Wright Glider Experience take?

The entire experience lasts about 4 hours, which includes ground school, your 5 flights, and the opportunity to review your GoPro footage and photos. The actual flying time is brief, but it will feel like a thrilling adventure!

Can I book the Wright Glider Experience on the same day?

No same-day reservations are allowed. Reservations must be made at least one week in advance. This ensures that we have adequate staff and can assess the best wind conditions for your experience.

What should I know about the weather and wind conditions?

The Wright Glider requires steady winds of around 15-25 mph, typically from the northeast or northwest. Weather can affect your flight experience, so it’s important to be flexible with your schedule if possible. We encourage you to check in with the Hang Gliding School (252) 441-2426 for a wind check and to confirm your booking.

How do I book the Wright Glider Experience?

All bookings must go through the Hang Gliding School at 252-441-2426. You can schedule your experience over the phone or inquire about specific dates, availability, and wind conditions.

Is there a waiver to sign?

Yes, a waiver is required for all participants. Make sure to complete it when you check in for your lesson.

The Wright Glider Experience is available all year! The more consistent winds of the Fall, Winter and Spring typically offer the best conditions for flying, so we typically schedule Wright Glider Clinics throughout those months. If you’d like to book individually to fly the Wright Glider, check out our upcoming clinic dates . You can even book yourself online! If the clinic dates don’t work with your schedule, we can schedule custom dates for groups of 3 or more people, and the Wright Glider is a fantastic club or educational experience for larger groups of 5 or more.

A normal flight will be 5-15 ft off the ground and about 50 yards in distance.

Wind conditions for lesson:

  • 15-25 mph
  • Flights will be tethered

Groundschool Includes:

  • Glider orientation
  • Controls
  • History

After the flights, we encourage you to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial and walk the hallowed ground where the Wrights perfected their flying machine in 1902 and changed the world with their powered flights in 1903.

When the Wright Brothers flew the glider, they did so in up to 30 mph winds! We prefer 15-25 mph, which are conditions that are common for the Outer Banks but are sometimes difficult to predict accurately. Keep this in mind when scheduling your Wright Glider Experience because sometimes the winds may be more ideal a day before or after the date/clinic that you select. Understanding this we encourage you to keep a somewhat flexible schedule if you can, because the experience is worth it!
