Lesson Breakdown

1. Check-In

Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled class time to check in, meet your instructor, and prepare for your adventure.

2. Ground School (Required for All Beginners)

Learn the essentials of flight in a ~30-minute safety and technique session, including:

  • Hang gliding history and State Park orientation

  • Glider control and equipment overview

  • Launching, flying, and landing techniques

  • Training film and safety review

Note: If it’s been over a year since your last lesson, Ground School must be retaken.

3. Walk to the Dunes

Enjoy a 10–15 minute scenic walk through the park to reach the best dune for flying that day. Your instructor will carry the glider, and the dune selection will depend on wind direction and safety conditions.

4. Take Flight

This is where the magic happens! From the top of the dune:

  • Launch solo into the wind with your instructor’s guidance

  • Fly between 30 to 100+ yards at heights of 5 to 15 feet

  • Complete 5 solo training flights in your beginner lesson

  • Land on your feet (or safely on the glider’s wheels—both are a win!)

Instructors may offer extra support for younger or lighter students as needed.

5. Wrap-Up & Souvenirs

After all flights are complete, return to the flight school to:

  • Receive your official flight logbook and sticker

  • Browse souvenirs and flight gear in our gift shop

  • Order your GoPro Film and Photo Package to relive your adventure

  • What to Bring for Your Dune Hang Gliding Lesson
Everything You Need for a Safe and Comfortable Outer Banks Hang Gliding Experience

Preparing for your lesson at Jockey’s Ridge State Park? Here’s a complete guide on what to pack for your dune hang gliding experience in Nags Head. These tips will help keep you safe, comfortable, and ready to fly.

    💧 Water (Don’t Forget It!)
Hydration is mandatory. During the warmer months, you will not be allowed on the dunes without water—this includes spectators.

Bring more water than you think you’ll need

The park has vending machines, but we recommend bringing your own bottle(s)

A water filling station is available at the hang gliding school

    🧴 Sunscreen
There is no shade on the dunes. Even on overcast days, the sun can be intense.

    Apply sunscreen before your lesson

Bring it with you to reapply between flights

Lip balm with SPF is also a good idea

    🕶️ Eye Protection
Bright sand = intense glare, even on cloudy days.

    Sunglasses are highly recommended

Don’t worry—they won’t fall off during your flight

Consider sunglasses with a strap if you have them

    👕 Comfortable & Athletic Clothing
You’ll be running on sand, wearing a harness, and moving around a bit. Dress accordingly:

Wear athletic or activewear that allows movement

Mid-thigh shorts, leggings, or pants are ideal (skirted items may ride up due to harness leg loops)

Avoid anything you wouldn’t want to get sandy

    👟 Footwear for Sand Dunes
The sand can be very hot in the summer—walking barefoot is not recommended.

Best: Socks with sneakers, Tevas, or other secure sandals

Avoid: Flip-flops or any footwear that might slip off

Forgot appropriate shoes? We sell neoprene sand socks in our shop

    📸 Camera or Smartphone
You’ll want to capture the moment—but sand and electronics don’t mix.

Bring a plastic bag or waterproof pouch to protect your gear

Small cameras or phones are fine if securely stored

For the easiest option, ask about our GoPro Flight Packages

🎒 Other Helpful Items to Pack
Small backpack or drawstring bag – Big enough to carry essentials, but light enough to walk with

Towel or blanket – A comfortable spot to sit between flights

Layers – Mornings and off-season winds can be chilly; dress in layers you can remove

Dry bag or pouch – For valuables, keys, and electronics (especially in spring or fall rain)

Important: You’ll walk about 10–15 minutes each way through sand to reach the flying area. Please do not bring large bags, coolers, or folding chairs. Pack light, bring only what you can comfortably carry, and you’ll have a much better experience.
